Job Description
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics (ATAP) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the BELLA Center team.
In this role, you will perform theoretical and computational research in the area of intense laser-and beam-plasma interactions and advanced accelerator concepts for BELLA Center programmatic R&D activities and projects. The focus of the BELLA Center is to explore and develop plasma-based acceleration and related concepts for high-energy physics applications and radiation production.
What You Will Do:
- Perform forefront theoretical and numerical research in the areas of laser-plasma and beam-plasma interactions, develop novel concepts for beam (of electrons, positrons, protons, and muons) production and acceleration, and methods of radiation generation.
- Execute and/or modify (parallel) simulation codes for the modeling of the laser-plasma interactions and plasma-based acceleration (e.g., PIC/fluid, fully-kinetic/quasi-static) and plasma dynamics (e.g., MHD codes for plasma target formation). Test, analyze, improve, and optimize the numerical schemes used in the simulations.
- Provide theoretical and modeling support for current and future experiments performed at the BELLA Center experimental facilities.
- Document and communicate results of work in peer-reviewed-journal publications and in oral presentations, including participation in meetings, conferences, and reviews.
- Work collaboratively with BELLA Center and ATAP Division scientists, engineers, post-doctoral scholars, technicians, operational staff, and students.
- Adhere to DOE and Berkeley Lab’s safety guidelines and safety culture, and contribute to an inclusive and supportive work environment for all. This includes carrying out Berkeley Lab’s core mission on IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access).
What is Required:
- Recent Ph.D. in Physics or related field.
- Knowledge of laser-plasma interactions, plasma-based acceleration, and/or advanced accelerator concepts.
- Knowledge of advanced scientific computing techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully publish research on computational modeling and theoretical studies of laser-plasma interactions, plasma physics, and/or beam physics.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in collaboration with professional staff both within and outside Berkeley Lab.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and multitasking skills.
The monthly salary range for this position is $4,636 - $7,371 and is expected to start at $6,477 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.
Notes:
- This is a full-time, 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
- This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
- Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
- This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
- Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
